Editor’s note: it is the month of December and for many bloggers it is the season of “Blogmas”. It is a marathon of posting every day for the month of December, often with a holiday theme. For some crazy reason I have dived into this as motivation to clear out some drafts and repost some posts from the last 6 years with a refresh. And maybe a few new stories! This post was a link to my trip report of Mount Si in 2017, one of only two times I have been on the trail. Those who know me know I avoid I-90 most of the time but this day turned out to be a great day to be on the this popular hike.
When I was taking the Everett Mountaineers scrambling course, one of the things we heard all the time was about how we needed to be in shape. And the standard for that was to be able to hike Mount Si on I-90 near Snoqualmie Pass under 2 hours with a loaded backpack.
Well, I don’t tend to hike Mount Si as it is a VERY popular trail. Don’t get me wrong, it is a beautiful hike close to Seattle with easy access by car (and bus now), if you can find a place to park on any given weekend. But it is one of those hikes that falls under my “hike only under the right conditions” kind of hike. As it turns out, I ended up doing the hike twice as in two times in a row but not because I had anything to prove. Sometimes, the trail just presents you with a gift and you have to take it.
You can read more about my hike on my Mount Si trip report page by clicking the image above. You will also hear about my first and only other time on Mount Si and the date that went bad…
Have you ever ended up having a bit more adventure than you anticipated? It is one of the reasons it is SO important to carry your 10 essentials. Don’t plan for current conditions or best laid plans, think about what might happen worst case scenario and or if you simply get stuck out longer or overnight. You can read about what I carry in my day pack during winter in my I Prepare For Failure post.
So, what kinds of hikes do I like to do for training that aren’t near Seattle and crowded? The Index Town Wall is great and I have done Heybrook Lookout three times in a row. Do you have a favorite alternative training hike?
