Time sure flies when you are having fun.
Here we are, two weeks later back at home and slowly recovering from jet lag. Somehow I thought the going to would be worse than the coming back but I am still waking up at odd hours and have a headache that won’t quite fade. All worth it, I say, all worth it.
It will take me awhile to get everything processed and organized but I’m going to share some stats and pictures that will give you an idea of the adventure we had in the 10 days (not counting 2 travel days) touring around the UK from England to Wales to Scotland and back. What a beautiful country, rich with history and stunning landscapes.
- 2 carry-on backpacks
- 7 airline movies
- 17 castles
- 12 landmarks
- 4 new-to-me long distance trails
- 1 pile of bear scat and a patch of nettles
- 2000+ miles of car driving
- 50 million traffic circles
- Rides via coach, bus, subway, train and boat
- Miles of walking
- Endless flights of stairs
- 7 different hostels
- 1 load of laundry
- 2 Tikka Masalas and 3 English breakfasts
- 4085 photos
- 20 cups of tea
As for my son and I, it was a mixed bag. Did we have an amazing time? Most definitely. Did everything go smoothly? No. Most conflict revolved around the joy of driving in a different country and him feeling he would be doing better than his mom. But we have walked away with a deeper understanding of who we are and how to relate to one another that made the whole trip worth every minute. One of my favorite things was watching him read every single information panel at the places we visited, soaking up the history of the region. I was one proud mama! Oh, and my second favorite thing was the ticket clerk at the train station in London who called me his older sister.
Just to let you know, I have some projects I am going to be working on outside the blog in the next few weeks and some important family time on the calendar so you will be seeing a few posts in the upcoming weeks I wrote up before leaving town about local hikes and such.
Look for future posts with more about our UK adventure in the next month!
Editor’s note: here are a few posts about our trip that I have written so far: 10 Ideas For Day Hikes On Long Distance Trails In The UK and The Go Outdoors Kids Camping Cookbook, Yes, You Can Eat Paleo While In The UK (But You Might Not Want To), Just Like Home: From The Lyle Cherry Orchard Trail To Scotland, and The Internet Is Shrinking The World One Friendship At A Time. Clearly I have more work to do…
