Last month I had a chance to take my friend Elle up the old trail to West and Middle Beckler Peak, a decommissioned route I first told you about in my post, One of Those Days. In that story, I talked about how I had almost been able to scramble up to the middle (sub) summit but it had felt just a bit too sketchy (the actual middle summit is a monolith requiring at least a top rope to be safe).
Well this time, when we got to the spot I had been stuck at, I looked up and over and it really didn’t seem like any big deal! In fact, I was ready to head up the angled slab when Elle discovered you could actually make your way around and behind a tree to come out closer to the top. Brother. I had even brought my helmet this time because I was determined I was going to make the (sub) summit and had worked it up in my mind in the last almost two years to be that risky.
As we sat and enjoyed the views below and around us, I thought about the fact that I have taken a scrambling class with the Mountaineers, even volunteered this year with the new students, and all the adventures I have had since I was here last. Quite a few actually. And I smiled at the confidence and skills I have gained that will help me have even bigger adventures in the future.
This last year while recovering from an injury, I wasn’t able to do half the things I had planned to be out doing last winter and spring. And yet somehow, here I am out enjoying the things I love to do again.
I am excited to see where this next year brings me and what new heights I can reach! Did you conquer any fears this summer? Reach new heights of your own?
For more details about this hike, you can read One of Those Days or Old Beckler Peak Trail. You should be comfortable on unmaintained trail where route finding skills might be necessary, especially between West and Middle Beckler where there is no trail until you come out on the ridge. My HWY 2 page has more hikes in the same area.
