My Hike:
11/15/2015
We headed out to find some snow today and were rewarded. The trail was wet, flat and muddy most of the way to Lake Stuart and a wet soppy marsh between the lake and the horseshoe nailed on the tree. Those famous downed trees are still there, only covered in snow and ice now. If there was a trail heading up to Horseshoe Lake, it’s anyone’s guess now that it is snow covered most of the way up.
My advice: follow the lake’s outflow stream up and down. We did not take the same route up as we did down, with a little help from GPS. The snow was about knee deep around the lake, the top layer frozen with the temps being in the mid 20s. Beautiful, though!
Directions: Drive Hwy 2 to Leavenworth and right onto Icicle Creek Road at MP 99. Turn left after 8.5 miles onto Eightmile Road, and continue on this dirt road for 3.8 miles to a large parking lot and the TH. The trail becomes washboarded as the season progresses, so high clearance vehicles are recommended. A toilet is available at the trailhead.
