The 6th year anniversary of Must Hike Must Eat passed by quietly on January 6th for a variety of reasons, the least of which being I was getting on a plane to savor sunshine in Mojave National Preserve (again) with my hubs (first time for him).
The main reason for little fanfare is because I have simply been focusing on other things that are bringing me joy right now and have been for a while. Writing is still one of them and I have been writing anywhere but here and here. This pandemic has been a funny (and not so funny) phenomena, so much time to think about what is important (and not) and what I wanted to focus my energy on.
It turns out in a pandemic that I didn’t have much energy, very little focus and anxiety was through the roof. Working in a middle school may have been the source of most of that but I would not change where I am for the world. I had to be very judicious with my time and effort and let go what was not serving. I changed to activities and spent time with people that were. How do we survive as human beings if we don’t learn to grow, change and modify?
When I first started Must Hike Must Eat I had zero expectations and it was simply a place to write out about my life, changes, and my favorite things like hiking and eating. But over the years I found myself chasing something and last year I decided that “something” was not what I wanted to spend my energy on. It wasn’t serving. So I set Must Hike Must Eat down.
And it felt really good.
Not having to be “on” all the time, not having to spend hours after any trip or adventure writing, designing, SEO-ing. Not having to share in every moment on here and social media. I even made a decision on all my social media to wait to share anything I did until much later. I wasn’t perfect at it but it was still such a huge weight lifted from my day-to-day life.
But I don’t have any intention of letting Must Hike Must Eat go, at least not the blog I started in the beginning. This is who I am and I want this space to continue to reflect that person, whoever she grows up to be. I still hike, I still eat and create recipes, I still get outdoors. But it isn’t all of who I am and I need this blog to represent all of me in order to serve.
So, here’s a start in that direction with a simple post as a reminder that this is a blog.
