I wrote to you Sunday about our wonderful trip to Cape Disappointment State Park and the fun we had exploring the beach and trails, along with learning more about the history of the area.
Now, let me tell you about the delicious dinner we had at Serious Pizza in Iwalco, Washington during our stay.
We had brought most of our food but one of my readers, Rick, had suggested that I try out Serious Pizza after reading about my experience at Pacific Pizza up the Washington Coast in Forks. So, on our second evening we ventured into the town of Ilwaco just down the road to see whether it lived up to his recommendation.
When he had visited there last, they were located just outside the park entrance. However, when we went to check it out we were told they had moved into town so that is where we found ourselves. It was the first weekend in March, so we found a table inside their bright, industrial feeling restaurant out of the elements.
The eatery was filled with what appeared to be locals because everyone seemed to know everyone else. The restaurant is run by a couple and their main menu revolves around wood-fired, Neapolitan-style pizza. All their sauces are handmade and they use tipo “oo” flour from Italy to make their dough fresh daily.
They had a long list of pizza options and a gluten-free crust available for a little extra. If you have Celiac’s, this wouldn’t be the place for you but if you simply avoid gluten for health reasons, this works just fine. They, also, had non-nightshade sauce options so I was happy.
When perusing the appetizers, I couldn’t help but notice the roasted butternut squash and I added that to my order along with a side salad. Got to get those veggies!
While waiting for our order, it was easy to tell that those around us were a mix of travelers like ourselves and locals but the owners chatted with everyone making it a welcoming and warm way to spend the evening.
My roasted squash came first. The caramelized onions were soft and sweet and went perfectly with the Gorgonzola and walnuts. I am not the biggest squash fan but I would eat this again. And again. My picture doesn’t show it well but it was a huge serving.
Next was my salad, the Pear & Gorgonzola with organic mixed greens. I was a little worried I wouldn’t be hungry when my pizza came because of the generous portions of everything!
But thankfully when you have to order something gluten-free, it usually comes smaller and just right for one person. In this case, I ate half and saved half for the next day for lunch. I had the Truffle Bianco which came with truffle oil and garlic (no red sauce). The crust was soft and chewy and it was hard not to eat the whole thing in one sitting!
If you don’t want pizza, they do offer other menu items in line with the area like steamer clams and clam chowder which my husband tried and loved.
So, the next time you find yourself in the Long Beach area in Southwest Washington, make sure and make a stop at Serious Pizza for a bite. I would check their website or Facebook before going as their hours are seasonal and seem to change each year.
