My Hike:
8/2014 My sisters visited this state park when we were kids on a 4-H camping trip and ever since I have been meaning to go myself. I can’t tell you how many times I drove through Vantage and said I was going to stop and never did. I took a trip solely to hike in Eastern Washington and made sure I marked this one off my list.
Now, it didn’t nearly live up to my expectations, it really was just a walk through petrified tree prison.
That is really how it felt. I could probably come up with something better to say but that would not be truthful. However, it was a great trail for imagining what desert hiking is like and the views from the top of the hill were cool.
There are several loops to choose from or just do a quick jaunt up to a viewpoint and back. You should still go, if only to stretch those legs on a long drive across the state. Oh, and watch for snakes.
Directions: From I-90 take exit 136 for Huntzinger Rd. Drive one mile, and turn right on Recreation Rd. Continue 0.5 mile and park in the large parking lot. There is a bathroom and visitor’s center. 4511 Huntzinger Road Vantage, Washington 98950 You will need a Discover Pass.
Check out my Eastern Washington page for more hikes in the area.
