My Hike:
8/25/2015
I took my niece for a short but sweet hike up to Evergreen Mountain Lookout. And yes, the road to get here is pretty sketchy. I can see why it closes often for washouts, definitely not for the faint of heart. But you do most of your gain on the road leaving just the quick 1.4 miles of trail to the lookout itself.
The views from the Evergreen Mountain Lookout included the wildfires in Okanogan, my niece commented that it looked like something had exploded. We went past the lookout on the ridge a short distance and swung in the hammock for awhile.
It was just the right distance and payoff for a 6 year old to enjoy. And the trail mix and pizza after bribe didn’t hurt either. I wrote more about our experience on this hike in On Uneven Ground and a future winter trip on Evergreen Mountain Lookout Winter Route.
Directions: Drive east on highway 2 from Monroe for 33 miles and just past Skykomish turn left onto the Beckler River Road (FR65). Go about 12.5 miles to a five-way intersection (the road becomes gravel at 7 miles). You went too far if you cross a bridge. Take the most right hand road signed Forest Road 6550, and proceed one mile to another intersection. Turn left, and drive to the trailhead, 9.5 miles along, at the end of the road.
