What is that thing they say about karma?
Last week, my adult son sent me this text message:
Our local ski slopes had opened up for the season and he had preemptively taken off a few days from work. Just like his mom, he wasn’t going to wait around for friends with the same schedule to go out and have fun outdoors.
All I could say was:
Because who am I to say anything as someone who goes out solo all the time? And whose own mother used to go out by herself all the time?
For most of my son’s teen and young adult life, I worried he’d never leave the house. Aside from the annual camping trip, gaming was all he wanted to do.
But last year he was hit with the snowboarding bug and this year he even has a season’s pass. We are planning a trip to Breckenridge in February! And he’s sending me photos from the slopes and letting me know, “The mountain was out.”
So it is with a mixed heart that I love knowing he is getting outdoors in his own way but at the same time as his mother I am telling myself not to worry too much about what might happen while he is out there. After all, he is a smart kid and learned a lot about outdoor safety from someone who knows.
His mother.
