I first talked about this fun little dip that I made up last winter to eat with my apple slices on my snowshoe up to Sun Top Lookout by Mt. Rainier. Since then, it has been a go-to when I need some extra calories quick. This is an embellished version of the original; as I make the same thing multiple times I am always trying to think of ways to “spice” things up. Pun intended.
Tahini is sesame seed paste most commonly found in hummus and as a sauce for falafel. I started using it as a substitute for nut butters both to mix up the nutrient profile and because nut butters can be so expensive.

You can buy apple pie spice in a lot of stores but it is super easy to make up from ground spices you already have.
I usually do a mix of whole and ground spices, depending on what’s in my pantry. For this batch, I used cinnamon from Costco and ground others from whole spices I had on hand.
Mix up all the ingredients together with 1 teaspoon of the apple pie spice mix in a bowl until smooth.
Enjoy with cut apple slices…try it on top coconut milk ice cream, too!
If you are not used to cooking with tahini, it does have a distinct taste that the vanilla mellows out. If you find it is too strong for you, feel free to substitute almond or sunflower butter.
