Here are some of the hiking and backpacking books that I consult often for hike and safety ideas. Yes, I am a little old school and like to look through actual books (even if I get them at my local library).
Ultralight Backpackin’ Tips
This book changed my backpacking game. If you want to go beyond just buying lighter gear and learn how to think differently as a backpacker to lessen not only what you take with you on your outdoor adventures but have a better perspective on your time while in the wilderness, you have to check out this book.
52 Olympic Peninsula Hikes
If you want the insiders guide to hiking in the Olympic National Park and on the Peninsula, no one out does Douglas Scott. His book has the most recent intel on ONP trails and his love for this area is evident in his hike descriptions. Plus, his photos of the area are stunning!
Day Hike North Cascades
This is one of the best books I have found for hiking in the North Cascades. Look for the most updated versions and always check current conditions as this area is as rugged and wild as they come!
Hiking Snohomish County
You might have to hunt a bit to find this little gem and like the book above verifying current conditions is important. But if you want to explore all the Snohomish County has to offer, this extensive list of hikes in the area is the best!
Mountaineers Books
Our local Seattle Mountaineers are the best place to look (besides your local library) for books on hiking and backpacking in Washington State and beyond. You can search for all sorts of locations, maps and reference books.
Wilderness Navigation
If you aren’t quite ready to take a navigation course (and I recommend that you do), this reference book can help you with the basics or refresh on a course you have already taken. It is easy to understand with great illustrations and photos.
Snowshoe Routes Washington
There are so many snowshoe possibilities here in Washington State and it isn’t hard to find one that matches your abilities. Dan shares some of the most popular routes and a few you may not have heard of yet! There is also an Oregon one I use, too, but make sure you look up current conditions here.
I hope you find these hiking and backpacking books useful for your next outdoor adventure. You can find my favorite guidebooks for hiking specific trails like the Pacific Crest Trail, Pacific Northwest Trail and Wonderland Trail on this page. I also share some great books and articles for women who love the outdoors here.
