Roasted cauliflower, cauliflower steaks, cauliflower tacos, cauliflower “fish” and chips, and kung pao cauliflower. Cauliflower rice, mashed cauliflower, cauliflower pizza crust, cauliflower tater tots, and cauliflower tortillas. What hasn’t cauliflower been made into? And what else will they come up with?
And I am the last person to talk, I have cauliflower in my falafel and stroganoff sauce.
A year or so ago while perusing the shelves at Grocery Outlet (if you don’t know by now I am a huge fan), I saw this on the shelf and decided I needed to try it. It didn’t sound like it would taste good but for the price, I will try almost anything. Pure Elizabeth’s products are decent for a store bought product, especially their grain free granola.
But had they gone too far with cauliflower rice hot cereal?? Out of the bag, it looked pretty much like a cheap packet of Quaker oats instant hot cereal and smelled like it, too.
The ingredients are what you would expect from a cauliflower product, the cauliflower is not the main ingredient but an add on. You need to get that protein somewhere else and thickeners are a necessity.
Almond Protein Powder, Organic Coconut Flakes, Almonds, Freeze Dried Cauliflower, Organic Coconut Sugar, Freeze Dried Apple, Organic Chia Seeds, Organic Flax Seeds, Organic Cinnamon, Organic Coconut Milk Powder (Organic Coconut Milk, Organic Tapioca Maltodextrin, Organic Gum Acacia).
Once you add the hot water it would be hard to tell it apart from the trail favorite. The cereal tasted reminiscent of my childhood and it was smooth and thick. So much so, I contemplated making a home version on the blog.
But the truth is that I still knew it was cauliflower and even though it tasted okay, I didn’t think it would be appealing on trail. It’s like when you eat garlic mashed cauliflower “potatoes” but it won’t ever be the same as those made with real spuds. I’d rather have a meal with a higher calorie base anyway, just stick to the nuts or cassava. So lucky for you, I have not tried to make this for backpacking and it’s probably the reason that you can’t buy this product anymore.
I love cauliflower and I love trying it in all different kinds of ways but I am going to draw the line at hot cereal, especially if the product would essentially be the same if you took the cauliflower out (just like cauliflower pizza crust).
How about you? Would you try cauliflower rice hot cereal or is that just too much on the cauliflower band wagon?
