When I was preparing to hike for 5 weeks on the Pacific Crest Trail, I made a large variety of meals so I didn’t really need to convert recipes into jumbo amounts. I just doubled meals I was already making and dehydrated the leftovers in the months beforehand. I do, however, dehydrate some staples in large quantity for tossing into recipes as I go.
But I know some folks are planning for 4-5 months and need to prepare recipes in large quantities so when I went looking for a recipe converter for when I cook for the community kitchen and found these, I thought I would share for those of you who want to make your meals all at once.
This one allows you to cut and paste an entire recipe into a box and multiply by the amount of meals you want to make. Easy, peasy! It only goes up to 8x but you can always do it once or twice until you get to the amount you would like (For 30x, do 6x and then 5x).
Divide, Multiply or Adapt Any Recipe
This one allows you to just do measurements. So if you know you need 30 tablespoons of something from a recipe above, you can convert it to cups or liters for easy purchasing in the store.
My only warning? In everything I have read and in my own experience, no matter how much you love something at home, YOU CAN GET SICK OF IT AFTER EATING IT FOR 4 MONTHS STRAIGHT. So it may be easy just to make the same thing because you know you have eaten it for years, but trust me you will want to mix things up a bit. Even if you make a large batch of something (like granola), try and vary the flavors after you make the base. Change the vanilla flavor to orange. Use dried strawberries and then banana. Yes, you will eventually get tired of granola but maybe not as soon!
