In case you do not follow Cascade PBS, they recently shared the latest Nick On The Rocks episode all about the geological history of Beacon Rock which towers on the Washington State side of the Columbia River Gorge.
There is great aerial footage of the 800 foot cinder cone and of course, Nick has all the geological facts on this once erupting volcano. Why do we see Beacon Rock as pillars of black basalt when it used to be covered with those cinders? Where did those cinders go? Is the basalt of Beacon Rock different than the basalt of the steep cliff walls lining the Columbia River Gorge itself? How much taller did the cinder cone used to be?
